The Sheffield Live Music Scene

You would expect a city with a large university student population to have some dance clubs and other live music venues that cater to a young crowd. To say that about Sheffield is an extreme understatement. The vibrant live music scene in the city has been the soundtrack to life for citizens of Sheffield for over 30 years.

Past and present Sheffield musicians have enjoyed great success. Names from the not too distant past include Joe Cocker, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker, Def Leppard, The Human League to name a few. More recently the Arctic Monkeys, Pink Grease, and The Long Blonds are very popular in and outside of Sheffield. The live music venues, such as clubs, pubs, halls, and stadiums fill the air with music, and vibrate the cities streets with a baseline.

So many talented acts come from Sheffield that is seems an odd coincidence. Perhaps something in the water that helps vocal cords develop, not likely, but something has to explain the large volume of musicians coming out of this fairly small area. Well, it’s not that big of a mystery.

It seems that in the early 1980s when the steel industry was on a down turn, someone on the Sheffield City Council heard about the big money involved in music. The multi-million dollar incomes of rock stars looked like an attractive way to bring a lot of money into the city. By 1982, a year that saw double-digit unemployment rates and 20,000 jobs lost, the City Council decided to do something about it by producing a few rock stars of their own.

It may not have occurred quite that way, but the fact is, the council got involved in the music business. They figured out that to have a great income producing music scene several things were needed. An infrastructure for the music industry was necessary, so the Council began funding projects related to music. A recording studio was needed to attract top acts and lot of live music venues were needed to showcase the local talent.

Sheffield City Trust owns Sheffield International Venues and operates Hallam FM Arena, and Sheffield City Hall to name a few of the 13 venues for music, sports, and entertainment. (SVI) Sheffield International Venues vision is to promote Sheffield as an international and cultural centre point for sport, leisure and entertainment, something they have been quite successful at doing since 1988.

udios is a training site for Sheffield City Council. It offers training to people interested in careers in the music business. Band Development, Band and Artist management, Music Technology, Music Business Courses and even DJ training courses are available. Because these courses are part of a local government backed system, they are competitively priced and the program really helps promote the music scene in Sheffield.

Of course the City Council offers other training units. Aspiring caterers, (if there is such a thing) can train at Sheaf Training alongside aspiring construction workers and customer service representatives. Tritec Computer Training is the City Council’s IT training ground and every city has at least one of these. The fact that the city recognizes and promotes popular music is just so surprising, and what’s more exciting and surprising is how well it works.

That answers the question how one small area can produce so many talented musicians. Not really a mystery, it’s more of a plan. Council backing is only a small part of the music scene however, and the venues that have been committed to growing the live music scene for the past twenty five or thirty years deserve much of the credit as well.

The Leadmill celebrated its silver anniversary in 2005, and has grown from a derelict flour mill in a rundown part of the city during the last stages of the steel industry’s demise. Unemployment and hopelessness was the consensus among young people at the time. A group of volunteers, students, artists, and unemployed people, who described themselves as “insane but likable” came together to set up a centre for arts and music for people like themselves who had nowhere to go.

The Leadmill has grown into a landmark, and the live music has grown legendary. The opening in 1980 of what was a performing arts center with jazz, pop bands, theatre, education workshops, and club nights began a tradition of live music that venues the world over have tried to emulate. The “insane but likable” founders turned out to be visionaries, except when they turned down a strange young blonde girl for a gig in 1983 who turned out to be Madonna. But who would have thought a club where the toilets backed up onto the dance floor would do so well. It’s not the bricks and mortar, but the bands and the experiences of the people who have been there time and time again that are memorable. The Leadmill is a launching pad for stars in the music business, and the place to see up and coming musicians in Sheffield.

The Leadmill is of course not the only famous live music venue in town, and is just one of the great live venues. There is a club in Sheffield for whatever your taste is. Live Music, DJ & MC stuff, techno, synthpop, indiepoppunk, and whatever other combinations of music are left over are represented somewhere in the city. Starting from a forward thinking city council and bright young people who love music, the city of Sheffield has been producing musicians like other cities produce butchers for the past 30 years.

Lindsay – who at one point in recent weeks had been spotted out on 30 out of 37 nights – may have a different definition of “out” than the average person. Lindsay was spotted at Hollywood hotspot Trousdale last Friday, where she reportedly threw a glass at ex-girlfriend Samantha Ronson, who was DJ’ing. She Tweeted on Saturday, “Last night-never again-believe it or not she’s done with the club scene.” Earlier in that week, Lindsay Tweeted that Samantha had “spit in my face.”

And on Wednesday night – within hours of calling the station – she was photographed at West Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont before heading to Timbaland’s birthday party at Drai’s at the W Hotel, which TMZ reports she left at 5 AM. TMZ also claims Lindsay was seen out partying at Chateau Marmont over the weekend.

Nevertheless, the night owl actress told KIIS that she’s “working hard.”

“I’m working hard, I’m doing my clothing line, I’m starting a movie soon, I’m producing some shows, I’ve been working a lot,” she said.

The movie in question is unknown; Lindsay was reportedly recently dropped from the in-development indie film “The Other Side.” Her next role is in Robert Rodriguez’ “Machete,” due later this year.

Is it possible that it’s already been a year since your baby arrived? Your knees and your back don’t lie – your baby is almost one year old. And you, naturally, want to throw a big celebration to commemorate the day. But first birthday parties are notorious for producing more tears than smiles, and no one likes a crabby birthday boy (or girl). So here are five ideas for throwing a tear-less first birthday party that everyone will enjoy.

1) Think Photo Op.

A baby’s first birthday is essentially an extended photo opportunity. The pivotal event is the moment when the baby stares at the becandled cake, just before plunging his or her hand into it. The rest of the party is just filler. So plan a brief (one hour – tops) celebration with as few distractions as possible.

2) Minimize extra kids.

If your baby has cousins close by that he or she already knows well, by all means include them. But a first birthday party is not an occasion to introduce your baby to bunches of new people. Grandparents or close friends, other family members and maybe a neighbor or two – keeping the guest list short will minimize the stress on the baby and on you. And where kids are concerned, remember that the noise level will affect everyone, so go shorter rather than longer on the invitation list.

3)Visuals are key.

Back to the photo op – a happy baby, smiling delightedly at her cake, dressed for posterity, surrounded by happy guests and balloons, is the ideal takeaway from this celebration. So set up the party to go the right way by scheduling it when baby will be well rested, and jumping into cake-cutting mode when baby is relaxed and happy – schedule be danged. Great pictures are your reward for letting baby take the lead.

4) Gifts after cake, if at all.

Bright colors and noisy wrapping are so exciting for your child that he or she can come undone. Save the gift-opening for after the cake event, if you have gifts at all. Lots of parents skip the gifts altogether at a first birthday party, as they notice how overwhelmed with plastic toys they are, even BEFORE the big day.

5) Celebrate generations.

Like all family celebrations, a first birthday party is an observation of time passing. Take special photos of your baby with the oldest family members and friends in attendance, as well as photos with older cousins or friends, and a group shot with the whole party in the frame. And don’t forget your animals!

You’ll notice that a successful first birthday party has none of the elements we associate with older kids’ parties – leave out the games, prizes, entertainment, pinatas and crafts. Most parents overdo it, thinking that complexity in a child’s party equals fun. Oftentimes, it’s just the opposite – the simpler, the better. And when the baby gets droopy, don’t try to keep her up. After all, it’s her birthday – if she’s sleepy, let her sleep.

If you are trying to plan a birthday party for a child with a winter birthday, you may be struggling. The good news is that while it seems easier to plan a birthday outdoors at the park, swimming pool, or even the backyard, there are still plenty of fun and creative options for those kids born during the winter months. Winter itself can lend a fun theme to a birthday party. So before you give up, and just go the local party venue, here are some unique, and creative, winter birthday party ideas-

Snow party- This party works best for 6-8 year olds. Whether you actually have snow or not, the snow itself makes a great theme.

For the invitations you will need-

White construction paper (for each snowman’s body)

Various other bits of paper, ribbon, or yarn to decorate each one

Markers

Scissors

Glue

Instructions for the project-Make a snowman body for each party guests. Use the bits of paper, ribbon and yarn to decorate one side and then write the party information on the other.

Decorations for this party are extremely easy. Don’t worry about matching all the snow (real snow is quite unique). Keep your eyes open for snow themed plates, cups, napkins and table coverings around Christmas time (even in warmer climates). You can also decorate the party area, by hanging up traditional snow flakes from the ceiling.

For the goody bags, you can add anything snow themed, but a fun touch would be a decorated snowflake sugar cookie. You can have the cookies baked before and laying out on a table. Each child receives a plastic knife, and container of frosting and some sprinkles. Let each child decorate their own cookie and then carefully place them in a zip-top bag to be taken home.

Tubing party- It can be difficult to please a picky pre-teen, even on their birthday. This birthday party is easy to put together, affordable, and teens will love the activity-centered theme. This party works best for the 11-13 year old age group.

For the invitations-

Computer

Instructions for the project-There is no need to spend a lot of time putting together crafty invitations for this age group. Have your birthday boy or girl help you print a computer message inviting their friends to a tubing party. Be sure to include specific instructions on when you will leave, return and the suggested mode of dress.

For traveling to the tubing site-If you have to travel more then about 20 minutes, you may want to consider having a snack on hand. Depending on the time of day, consider having a water bottle, energy bar, or candy bar for each party guest.

While tubing be sure to get a picture of each of the party guests, coming down the hill. You can print out the pictures later, place in a frame (you can find winter themed ones affordably at your local dollar store), and give them out as party favors. Be sure to include some group shots as well.

When returning home-In lieu of birthday cake, be sure to have plenty of hot chocolate and yummy donuts for your party guests to refuel on.

Princess Winter Wonderland party- There is no reason not to combine two themes into one party. Little girls will love the idea of being the princess, of the winter wonderland. This party works best for girls in the 5-8 year old, age group.

For the invitations you will need-

Cardstock

Plastic winter snowflakes

Stamp of a princess

Blue ink pad

Glitter sparkles

Glue

Confetti snowflakes

Markers

Instructions for the project-Write or print out, the party information onto the cardstock. Glue on the plastic snowflake as a decorative accent. Place inside the envelope. On the outside of the envelope, stamp an image of the princess, (using the stamp and ink pad), and before it dries, pour the white glitter sprinkles over it. Before sealing the envelopes, add some confetti snowflakes, so that they will fall when the invitation is opened.

For decorations-Use white and clear plastic snowflakes and cardboard stars, (all of these can be found at dollar stores), hung in a random pattern from the ceiling. You can also place white and light blue streamers, around each of the door openings.

For party favors-You will want to provide a princess tiara, or crown, glitter stick, (you can tie ribbons and bells on the bottom), and princess themed candy, for each party guest.

Gingerbread House Party- Kids of most ages will enjoy assembling these “gingerbread” houses.

For the invitations you will need-

Brown construction paper

Other colors of construction paper

Googly eyes

Glue

Trace a gingerbread man shape on to brown paper with one of your cookie cutters, or find a template online. Have the birthday child decorate the man with googly eyes and colored paper pieces, affixing them with glue.

For decorations- Use white streamers all over the house, suggesting white frosting. Fluffs of quilt batting in strategic places could represent snow.

For party favors-cellophane baggies with gingerbread men erasers and real gingerbread men to eat on their way home.

For the party- Decorate “gingerbread” houses using graham crackers, hot glue (with adult supervision!) and frosting. Don’t forget the candy pieces for decoration.

Snow Wars- Make sure guests dress appropriately for this outside party.

For the invitations you will need-

White paper

These super easy invitations are fun to make. Trace a circle on white paper using a glass or bowl, depending on the size you want to fit in an envelope. Cut our your snowball, and have the birthday child write the party details on it.

For decorations-Different decorating requirements for a different kind of party. Make sure the entryway is wide open for everyone to shed boots, hats, coats and scarves and mittens after the snow war. Decorate the yard with white Christmas lights and spray decorations on the snow with food coloring in a water bottle.

For the party-Party guests will divide into teams, build a snow fort and make snowballs. You may provide ice cream scoops or bread pans for these creations. Set a timer, start the war, and join in! After a winner is declared, everyone wins with hot chocolate and cookies fresh out of the oven inside.
