How should we celebrate Christmas Eve?

My husband and i spend thanksgiving with my family so Christmas is spent with his family. In the past Christmas day was spent at his grandmothers, where it was a nightmare. So my husbands mother started having us over for christmas eve so that we could celebrate with just them, (Dad, mother, sister , my husband and i) but this year my mother-in-law is hosting the Christmas dinner because grandma decided she didn't want to do it. so would it be stepping on toes to ask my mother-in-law if she would mind if we celebrated Christmas Eve at our (New) house. That way she wouldn't have to cook christmas eve and Christmas day. plus, we just bought a house and it would be the first time to have his family over for dinner. Each woman of my husbands side of the family hosts a holiday and now my mother in law host 3, easter, christmas and christmas eve, so i thought it would be nice if i could host one, like christmas eve. I am very close to my mother in law and we don't have issues with eachother or compete over anything, i just want to make sure it isn't over stepping.
